Tanzania is a land of breathtaking landscapes, rich traditions, and vibrant cultures. Traveling with children here transforms every moment into a magical adventure—where curiosity meets culture, and learning feels like play. Whether you’re exploring ancient towns, dancing with the Maasai, or tasting spices straight from the source, Tanzania offers unforgettable experiences for families.

Here are 10 family-friendly cultural activities to consider on your Tanzanian journey:

1. Visit a Maasai Village

Immerse your family in the vibrant traditions of the Maasai people. We were blessed to stay at the Original Maasai Lodge-Africa Amini Life. We enjoyed bush walks, the Maasai singing experience, amazing Maasai crafts, spear throwing and a roasted goat fireside experience

2. Go on a Safari Adventure

Embark on a family-friendly safari in renowned parks like Serengeti, Tarangire, Arusha, and Ngorongoro. Witnessing animals in their natural habitat offers an educational and thrilling experience for children. Some parks offer hot air balloon rides and opportunities to learn about Maasai culture. Ensure to check age restrictions and suitability for young children when planning your safari. We went on a day trip to the Tarangire National Park on the 5th birthday of our son; such an amazing experience.

3. Discover Stone Town, Zanzibar

Wander through the historic alleys of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its historically crafted fancy doors. Explore landmarks such as the Old Fort (it’s being used as an arts and crafts center now), Hamamni Persian Baths, Princess Salme Museum, Freddie Mercury Museum, the Old Slave Market, Old Dispensary, and St. Joseph’s Cathedral. You can also cross over to Prison island (also known as Changu island) and learn about its history. In the evening, enjoy local delicacies at the Forodhani Park’s night market (starts at 5pm). Make sure you try the sugarcane juice with a twist of ginger and the famous Zanzibar pizza.

4.Visit a Spice Farm in Zanzibar

Engage your family’s senses with a tour of a local spice farm. There are many of them; we selected one that supports widows and divorced women. We learned about the cultivation of spices like cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg.  We also tasted jackfruit for the first time and let’s just say it was not my favourite.

5. Cook some island cuisine

Engage your family’s taste buds by joining a traditional cooking class. Learn to prepare local dishes using indigenous ingredients and techniques passed down through generations. Mama Zanzibar does not teach only culinary skills but also provides insights into Tanzanian culture and hospitality through local attire and market visits.

6. Relax on Zanzibar’s Kid-Friendly Beaches

Fine white sand, warm turquoise waters and sunsets to die for. What more could one ask for? Choose from several beaches that form this archipelago – Paje, Nungwi, Kendwa…

Take walks, frolic in the calm shallow waters, watch the sunrise and sunsets, enjoy beach entertainment as you munch on delectable platters.

7.Safari Blue

Take a boat ride on the Safari Blue tour to explore the waters around Mnemba Island. Activities include dolphin watching, snorkelling, and visiting sandbanks (enjoy a swim there).

Other water activities to be enjoyed in Zanzibar are surfing, jet skiing, scuba diving and kite surfing. We couldn’t, but you can also check out seaweed farming (Mwani Zanzibar).

8.Tazari twins cave and chameleon center

Discover the natural wonders of the Tazari Twins Cave and observe various chameleon species. My son got to pose with the chameleons and help feed them. Quick Question – Do chameleons only change colour when they sense danger? Because they never did around us.

9.Horse Riding in Zanzibar

Visit the Zanzibar Horse Club in Nungwi, Kidoti or Mangapwani for a unique horse-riding experience. Families can enjoy horse rides along the beach, through local villages or even swim with the horses, creating unforgettable memories. It was nerve-wrecking handling the house in the water, but it was one of those once in a lifetime experiences!

10. Quad Biking Tours Around Zanzibar Villages

For families with older children, quad biking tours offer an exciting way to explore local villages. These guided tours provide insights into daily life in Zanzibar while satisfying the adventurous spirit.

Final Tips:

  • Research and Reviews: Before participating in any activity, read recent reviews, especially those with lower ratings, to ensure the experience aligns with your family’s expectations.
  • Age Appropriateness: Some activities may have age restrictions or may not be suitable for very young children. Always check in advance.
