When we set out for Senegal, our hearts were brimming with excitement. We envisioned vibrant markets, rich cultural experiences, and the joy of exploring a new land. However, travel has its own plans, and sometimes, the journey teaches us more than the destination itself.
The Unexpected Twists
Travel Fatigue: The long flight from Dubai took a significant toll on us. My usual organizational prowess seemed to vanish as fatigue set in, making it challenging to keep up with our planned itinerary.
Culinary Challenges: As a food enthusiast, I was eager to dive into Senegal’s renowned cuisine. Yet, our stomachs had a different agenda. Adjusting to new flavours and ingredients proved more difficult than anticipated, dampening our culinary adventures.
Health Hurdles: The most daunting challenge was when my son fell ill, necessitating a hospital visit. His recovery was slow, prompting us to reconsider our travel plans and prioritize his well-being.
Language Barriers: Communication became a hurdle, especially for my son and husband. Relying on my school-taught French, I navigated conversations, realizing the value of language skills in foreign lands.
Emotional Strain: The accumulation of these challenges affected my spirit. I found it hard to connect with the beauty around us, feeling out of sync with the experience I had envisioned.

Silver Linings Amidst the Storm
Despite the hurdles, we found moments of grace:
- Rest and Reflection: The unforeseen downtime allowed us to rest deeply, offering a respite we didn’t know we needed.
- Language Triumphs: My ability to communicate in French became a lifeline, impressing my husband and facilitating smoother interactions.
- Retail Therapy: I indulged in local shopping, finding joy in discovering unique clothing pieces that now hold special memories.
- Father-Son Bonding: My son cherished a spa day with his dad, a soothing experience that uplifted his spirits.
- Spiritual Presence: Amidst the chaos, we felt a profound sense of divine presence, reminding us of the importance of gratitude in all circumstances.
